Dental CT scan is called CBCT which stands for Cone Beam Computed Tomography. It provides 3D images of the teeth and jaw whereas x-rays provide 2D images which have limitations on exact size and shape. It is used to diagnose a variety of dental problems, such as 3D volume of the bone, exact location of the infection, and exact shape of root canals. CBCT does involve exposure to radiation. However, the amount of radiation exposure is very low (much lower than medical CT scan) and is considered safe by the FDA.
