Dental Checkup at Hunters Point dentistry

A dental checkup is a crucial preventive measure to maintain optimal oral health. During this routine appointment, our skilled Long Island City team thoroughly examines your teeth, gums, and overall oral cavity. We assess any signs of decay, gum disease, or other dental issues, ensuring timely intervention if needed. These regular visits to our dentist office play a key role in preventing potential problems, preserving your oral well-being, and promoting your overall health.

A typical dental checkup will include the following:

  • History: Your dentist will ask you about your dental history, including any previous dental problems or concerns.
  • Dental Exam: Your dentist will examine your teeth, gums, and oral tissues for signs of problems, such as cavities, gum disease, or oral cancer.

  • Digital X-rays (and CT scan if necessary): Your dentist may take X-rays of your teeth to look for problems that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
  • Treatment planning: If we find any problems during your checkup, they will discuss treatment options with you.
Digital X-rays

Digital X-ray at Hunters Point dentistry

At our practice in Long Island City, we rely on digital x-ray technology to provide a comprehensive view of your oral health. These advanced x-rays offer a detailed assessment of your teeth, roots, and underlying structures with minimal radiation exposure. The digital format allows for immediate viewing and easy sharing, enabling our team to make accurate diagnoses and personalized treatment plans efficiently. By using digital x-rays, we prioritize your safety, reduce environmental impact, and ensure your dental care is both precise and progressive.

Dental CT Scan

Digital CT scan at Hunters Point dentistry

Dental CT scan is called CBCT which stands for Cone Beam Computed Tomography. It provides 3D images of the teeth and jaw whereas x-rays provide 2D images which have limitations on exact size and shape. It is used to diagnose a variety of dental problems, such as 3D volume of the bone, exact location of the infection, and exact shape of root canals. CBCT does involve exposure to radiation. However, the amount of radiation exposure is very low (much lower than medical CT scan) and is considered safe by the FDA.

Teeth Cleaning

Dental cleaning is an essential step in maintaining your oral health. Our thorough cleaning process removes plaque, tartar, and stains, ensuring healthy gums and a refreshed smile. Regular dentist cleanings contribute to preventing dental issues and promoting lasting well-being.

  • Prophylaxis or routine cleaning: It is the most common type of dental cleaning and it is performed on healthy gum. It is an important part of maintaining good oral health and preventing cavities and gum disease.
  • Cleaning for inflamed gum: This type of cleaning is performed when your gums are inflamed (Gingivitis).
  • Deep cleaning: The professional terminology is scaling and root planing (SRP). SRP involves removing plaque and tartar buildup from below the gum line, and it is recommended for people who have gum disease (Periodontitis). We can additionally use a special dental laser to treat gum disease.

We will perform a dental exam at our Long Island City dentist office, and assess your oral health to determine the appropriate cleaning procedure.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride Treatment at Hunters Point dentistry

Fluoride treatment at our dental practice offers invaluable benefits for your oral health. This mineral strengthens enamel, making teeth more resistant to decay. It also helps reverse early signs of decay and provides protection against future cavities. With our targeted fluoride application, we aim to fortify your smile and promote lasting dental wellness.

Fluoride solution is typically applied to children’s teeth, but it can also be applied to adults’ teeth. It is a good idea to get fluoride varnish applied every 6 to 12 months, especially if you are at high risk for cavities.

Oral Cancer Screening

Oral Cancer Screening at Hunters Point dentistry

Oral cancer screening is a procedure that looks for signs of oral cancer. It is typically done by a dentist or dental hygienist, and it involves looking at the inside of the mouth for any abnormalities. If the dentist or dental hygienist finds any abnormalities, they may recommend further testing, such as a biopsy. Oral cancer screening is important because it can help to find cancer early, when it is most treatable. Here are some tips for reducing your risk of oral cancer:

  • Don’t smoke
  • Avoid chewing tobacco
  • Limit your alcohol intake
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Get regular dental checkups

This thin, invisible layer acts as a shield, reducing the risk of cavities in these vulnerable areas. With our quick and painless application, dental sealants are an excellent way to enhance your oral health, especially for children and teenagers. By choosing our dental sealant services, you’re making a proactive choice to preserve your smile and prevent potential dental issues in the future.
