Pregnancy and Dental Health

Pregnancy is a time of many changes, both physically and emotionally. It is also a time
when women are more susceptible to oral health problems. Hormonal changes,
changes in diet, and morning sickness can all contribute to poor oral health during
pregnancy.

That’s why it is so important to take extra care of their teeth and gums during
pregnancy. Here are a few tips:

  • Schedule a dental checkup and cleaning early in your pregnancy. Your dentist can
identify and treat any potential problems before they become more serious.
  • Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time. Use a fluoride toothpaste
    and soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Floss your teeth once a day. Flossing helps to remove plaque and bacteria from
between your teeth, where your toothbrush can’t reach.
  • Avoid sugary foods and drinks. Sugar is a major culprit in tooth decay. If you must
have something sweet, choose healthy snacks like fruits and vegetables.
  • Rinse your mouth after vomiting. Morning sickness can cause acid to build up in your
mouth, which can erode your tooth enamel. Rinsing with water or a fluoride mouthwash
can help to neutralize the acid and protect your teeth.
  • Use an antimicrobial mouthwash. An antimicrobial mouthwash can help to reduce
bacteria in your mouth and prevent gum disease. However, be sure to choose a
mouthwash that is safe to use during pregnancy.

In addition to the above tips, it is also important to follow a healthy diet, engage in
regular physical activity, and get enough rest during pregnancy. All of these factors can
contribute to good overall health and well-being, including good oral health.
